File format extension plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop is definitely one of the best raster image editors and it probably supports all image types you’ll need for your work. So if someone says, that Photoshop need a plug-in, because it doesn’t support some of the needed type it may sound like heresy. But, don’t hurry. There is still a chance, that you’ll find an image with a weird extension, or you’ll need to save image with particular settings…and suddenly find out, that Photoshop doesn’t support them. (By the way, if you think that there are few image file formats, take a look at http://www.openwith.org/categories/images) Moreover, what will you do, if you need to apply some of the very-very-photoshop-like features to the image, which has nothing in common with raster, like SVG or DXF for example.

There are tons of plug-ins for Photoshop around the web. Here I’d like to present you some of format extension plug-ins, which I found useful and some, that just add additional possibilities to work with common Photoshop supported types.

Note: I was using Adobe Photoshop CS4, so some of good plug-ins for CS3 and earlier versions of Creative Suite, which doesn’t support CS4, are not listed, because I couldn’t try them.

1.SVG Kit for Adobe Creative Suite (http://svg.scand.com) is a plug-in, which adds support of SVG images to Adobe Photoshop. Adobe’s support of SVG files format is limited, so it is possible to work with SVG directly only in Adobe Illustrator. SVG Kit gives opportunity to open SVG image like any other supported one. In addition, SVG image is automatically decomposed to couple of layers, so you can work with them separately.System requirements: Windows and Mac OS X 32 and 64 bit. Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS4 and CS5.Price: 99$ per licence. 30 days full-functional trial available.

2.Electric Image (EIAS) Format (http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/info/eiformat.html) is image format plug-in, which allows to open files, created by Electric Image Animation System (http://www.eitechnologygroup.com/). Also reads.EIZ ElectricImage Z-buffer depth files. According to the developers tests, works 100 times faster then the Adobe’s plug-in.System requirements: Windows and Mac OS. Almost all versions of Photoshop, depending on the type of operating system installed.Price: Free.

3.PNGOUT Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop (http://www.ardfry.com/png-plugin/) allows to work with some unsupported types of PNG images (like PNG8 files with transparency), and gives additional save options. (like, for example adding or removing some kind of image chunk)System requirements: Windows and Mac OS X. Adobe Photoshop CS to CS5.Price: 29,95$

4.ProEXR (http://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/) greatly expands on Photoshop’s standard openEXR plug-in functionality. In addition allows to save layered EXR files, chose from different compression options, when saving and do some other things.System requirements: Windows and Mac OS. Photoshop CS3 or higher.Price: 95$ . 15 days full-functional trial available.

5.Sibcode Icon plugin for Photoshop (http://www.sibcode.com/icon-plugin/), gives you all necessary tools for creating.ico images. It works with multi-format icons, transparency and semi-transparency etc. You can both export and import.ico image and use this plug-in with some other software like Elements, AfterEffects, Premiere etc.System requirements: Windows only. Photoshop CS or higher.Price: Free.

6.Blow Up 2 (http://www.alienskin.com/blowup/index.aspx). Not sure, whether it is correct to place it here, but the plug-in helps to smooth over one of the worst problems of raster files: quality loss on resizing. By temporary converting image to vector representation, it makes “zoomed in” parts look better, so can be useful for preparing hard copy of the image.System requirements: Windows and Mac Os X. Photoshop CS2-CS5Price: 149-249$

7.SiteGrinder 2 (http://www.medialab.com/sitegrinder3/) “Web designers and developers, don’t go by”. The plug-in, which builds web sites from multilayer Photoshop documents. The plug-in creates CSS, controls and other staff from the PSD multilayer image.System requirements: Windows and Mac Os X. Photoshop 6.x-CS4Price: 129-349$

8.SuperPNG (http://www.fnordware.com/superpng/) is a free Adobe Photoshop plug-in for using PNG (“ping”) files. Compared to native Adobe’s PNG plug-in it saves considerably smaller PNGs. Note, that I couldn’t download it from the main site, so you can find it with the help of search engines.System requirements: Windows and Mac Os. Photoshop 5.5 or higher.Price: Free.

9.j2k (http://www.fnordware.com/j2k/) Nice and small plug-in, that allows to open/save JPEG 2000 files. Compared to standard JPERG its comrade offers better quality and smaller file size. It is quite a common practice to develop the website design in the graphic design software first of all. All the pages of the web site are designed using the graphic design software and are then coded in different programming languages to develop the web design. The file format that is most commonly developed using the designing software is that of .psd files. These Photoshop design templates are then worked upon to convert these into different sections of a webpage and coded separately. So, how does the web design services providers go about doing these?

First step is the creation of the design template in photoshop. This is done by the expert graphic artists who are familiar with the nuances of website designing.

Second step involves the creation of files. One is the CSS file which is usually created by the name of style.css.Other is the index.html file which represents the home page of the site. A folder also needs to be created with the name of -images- that would be containing all the images and graphics. This step also involves the initialisation of the CSS file in between the header tags in the coding section of Dreamweaver.

In the third step, each of the broad sections of the web page are clearly defined and named as per DIV classification. For example, you can have DIV # header, DIV #footer etc. There is a container which is first defined and is centred on the web browser and it is this container which will contain all the DIV sections.

Fourth step involves the background colour selection from a small area of the template body using the rectangular marquee tool (M). The selection will show the colour of the template in the hexadecimal coding using the Eye dropper tool (I). After making selection, using the Edit section of the Photoshop file, select Copy Merged and then you need to paste the selection to a new document which you will need to open using Ctrl-N command. If Photoshop does not automatically fill in the size dimensions of the item on clipboard, you can take care to ensure that these are same as the once which you have selected using the rectangular marquee. After copying, it needs to be saved as Save for Web & Devices in the PNG file format in the images folder by the name of background.png.

Fifth step in website designing services involves coding for the background image in the source code editor. This will involve the setting of margin, padding, border, etc. as well as giving the path for background image and defining the fonts and colour codes.

Sixth step would involve the slicing of the title name and coding it. Title is selected with rectangular marquee tool and the same operation is carried out as in previous step of background coy and pasting. Name the file as title.png. Place it in the images folder. The coding will involve the source code editing sheet as well as the CSS stylesheet. In source code, you need to insert another DIV id by the name of -title. And this -title- will be defined in the CSS stylesheet.

Website design similarly follows these steps till the webpage template is cut, sliced and copied.

Top 5 New Features in Photoshop CS4

On the 23 September 2008 Adobe Systems announced the release of the highly anticipated latest version of Photoshop, Photoshop CS4.

Photoshop has long been the industry standard professional digital image manipulation program. It fact it would be hard to get a job as a graphic designer if you didn’t have experience using Photoshop.

So lets explore the new features in Photoshop CS4 and then decide whether for 9 it’s worth upgrading from CS3 to CS4. If you are still working on an older version of Photoshop such as CS2 or CS then I would definitely recommend upgrading. This article is going to focus on the top 5 new features in Photoshop CS4.

1. Smoother panning and zooming and fluid canvas rotation

Working with bitmap images often involves editing pixel by pixel. The smoother zooming feature will give you much more control as you zoom in and out of your bitmaps. Plus the new rotation feature is very cool and is a huge improvement on the somewhat clumsy rotate image handles. I give these new features 9 out of 10.

2. New Adjustments Panel

This panel contains some of the most commonly used color and tone correction tools. Tools, which Photoshop users use every day such as Levels, Curves and Hue & Saturation are now all located on this single panel. Photoshop allows you to edit in a non-destructive mode using an Adjustments layer. Even though this feature is not new per se, this new Adjustment panel makes it easier to work with many of these stable Photoshop tools. I give this new feature 5 out of 10.

3. New Masks Panel

This is a very cool new feature. The new Masks Panel is really powerful and it gives you full control over both pixels and vector masks. You can adjust mask density and feathering, easily select non contiguous objects, and much more.

You can still create layer masks in the old fashioned way but this new panel is much more powerful and will make learning masking easier for new users of Photoshop. I give this new feature 8 out of 10.

4. Content-Aware Scaling

This is my favorite new feature in Photoshop CS4. This new and revolutionary Content-Aware Scaling feature is used when re-sizing images. Users can select an area of an image that you do not want to lose when resizing and Photoshop will protect it, by removing other areas first.

Content-Aware Scaling automatically recognizes skin tones to keep people from being squeezed when you resize an image. So as you resize an image, people in the picture may move closer together or further apart, but they will remain properly proportioned whilst the background changes. I would have to give this feature a 10 out of 10.

5. Many enhancements

My final new feature is really just a whole bunch of cool improvements to existing features in Photoshop CS3. These include: 1. Improved color correction with re-engineered Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools 2. Improved auto-blending of images. 3. New preview feature on the Clone Tool. 4. Better raw image processing. I give these new features a 7 out of 10.

So in conclusion, Photoshop CS4 introduces some very new and exciting features such as fluid canvas rotation and content-aware scaling, a few new panels such as Mask Panel and Adjustments panel which help to improve your workflow, and a whole bunch of enhancements to existing features.

Overall I would have to say that 9 investment to upgrade is a no-brainer. Enjoy!
